Arsenal Matrix Modes / Mode Packs

Overview

Unless otherwise noted, the Matrix Modes/Mode Packs listed on this page are compatible with any Arsenal-powered Control Surface script that  has a Button Matrix.  Also, the System Requirements and Purchasing Info are the same for all Modes/Mode Package on this page. 


Each Matrix Mode dictates the functionality of the controller's Button Matrix, Matrix Accessory Buttons (typically its Scene Launch Buttons) and Arrow Buttons.


Each Matrix Mode is briefly described on this page. For complete details about how each Matrix Mode works within a particular Arsenal-powered Control Surface script, please refer to the script's user manual.

ClyphX Mode

This is a Mutable Mode that sets up the Matrix for triggering user-assignable actions via our powerful powerful ClyphX Pro script. Each instance of this Mode can trigger different sets of ClyphX actions.


The Matrix Accessory Buttons are used for storing/recalling Snapshots of the settings of the Tracks and Devices in your Live set. Each instance of this Mode can store its own set of Snapshots.


The Arrow Buttons are used for basic navigation.

Global User Mode

Sets up the Matrix for controlling user-assignable global parameters and properties (such as transport and tempo) as well as for triggering user-assignable actions via our powerful ClyphX Pro script.


The Matrix Accessory Buttons are set up as a Button Slider for controlling Cue Volume while the Arrow Buttons are used for basic navigation.

Note Mode

Provides 3 Sub-Modes for playing instruments on the current Track. These Sub-Modes will be automatically selected based on the contents of the Track.


  • Scale – Sets up the Matrix to play Scales (24 Scale Types are available) and is useful for playing virtually any instrument.


  • Drum Rack – Sets up the Matrix for playing multiple 4x4 quadrants of Drum Rack Pads.


  • Simpler - Sets up the Matrix for playing multiple 4x4 quadrants of Slices in Simpler.


In all of these Sub-Modes, the Matrix Accessory Buttons are used for controlling Note Repeat, which allows the Matrix to produce a stream of continuous, rhythmic Notes at different rates (such as 1/32 or 1/4). 


The Arrow Buttons are used for navigating Tracks in Session View or the Insert Marker in Arrangement View and for switching between Octaves.

Note Plus Mode

Offers the same functionality as Note Mode (described above) and adds some additional functionality. The Drum Rack and Simpler Sub-Modes each offer two additional Layouts that you can switch between.


  • Default - Allows for monophonic Step-Sequencing into MIDI Clips and splits the Matrix into 3 quadrants; one for playing Drum Rack Pads or Slices in Simpler, one for selecting the portion of a Clip to Step-Sequence into and one for adding/removing Steps.


  • 16 Levels - Splits the Matrix into 2 quadrants; one for playing Drum Rack Pads or Slices in Simpler and one for playing the selected Drum Rack Pad or Slice in Simpler with ascending Velocities.


In both of these Sub-Modes, the Matrix Accessory Buttons have some additionally functionality as well. When Note Repeat is not in use, they are used to select the Resolution and Velocity to use for Step-Sequencing.  

Scale Sequence Mode

Sets up the Matrix for Scale-based polyphonic Step-Sequencing into MIDI Clips on the current Track. 24 Scale Types are available.


The Matrix Accessory Buttons are used to select the Resolution and Velocity to use for Step-Sequencing.


The Arrow Buttons are used for navigating Tracks in Session View or the Insert Marker in Arrangement View and for switching between Octaves.

Arrange Mode Pack

 Includes 3 Modes for working in Arrangement View.


  • Cue Mode - Sets up the Matrix for launching Cues (aka Arrangement View Locators). The Matrix Accessory Buttons are used for adding/removing Cues. The Arrow Buttons are used for navigating Tracks in Session View or the Insert Marker in Arrangement View and for Rewind/Fastforward.


  • Cue Snap Mode - Offers the same functionality as Cue Mode (described above) and adds the ability to store, associate and launch Session Snapshots (the playing state of all Tracks in a Live Set) with Cues. In this way, Cues can be used to sequence the launching of Clips in Session View.


  • Song Navigation Mode - Sets up the Matrix for quickly navigating the timeline of songs and displaying where you are along the timeline. The Matrix Accessory Buttons function as a visual metronome. The Arrow Buttons are used for navigating Tracks in Session View or the Insert Marker in Arrangement View and for navigating between banks of bars that can be selected from the Matrix.

Clip Play Mode Pack

Includes 3 Modes for playing Clips in different ways.


  • Chop and Loop Mono Mode - Sets up the Matrix for monophonic Clip Chopping and Loop Control over a single Clip on the current Track. The Matrix Accessory Buttons are used for selecting the Quantization to use for Clip Chopping while the Arrow Buttons are used for basic navigation.


  • Clip Play Mono Mode - Provides 3 monophonic Sub-Modes for playing a single Clip on the current Track. In all of these Sub-Modes, the Matrix Accessory Buttons are used for selecting the Quantization to use for playing Clips while the Arrow Buttons are used for basic navigation.
  •      Chop/Loop - Offers the same functionality as Chop and Loop Mono (described above).
  •      Scrub/Loop - Sets up the Matrix for Clip Scrubbing and Loop Control.
  •      Chromatic - Sets up the Matrix for Chromatic Clip play.


  • Clip Play Poly Mode - Provides 3 polyphonic Sub-Modes for playing Clips across the Tracks within the Grid Selector (surrounds the 8 Tracks being controlled). In all of these Sub-Modes, each Column in the Matrix will control a Clip on the corresponding Track.  Also, the Matrix Accessory Buttons are used for selecting the Quantization to use for playing Clips while the Arrow Buttons are used for navigating the Grid Selector.
  •      Chop - Sets up the Matrix for Clip Chopping.
  •      Scrub - Sets up the Matrix for Clip Scrubbing.
  •      Loop - Sets up the Matrix for Clip Loop Control.

Device Mode Pack

Includes 4 Modes for controlling Devices.


  • Device Mode - Sets up the Matrix for controlling parameters of the selected Device. Each Column in the Matrix functions as an Intelligent Button Slider for controlling a parameter. The Matrix Accessory Buttons are used for navigating between Banks of parameters to control and for toggling the Device on/off. The Arrow Buttons are used for for navigating Tracks in Session View or the Insert Marker in Arrangement View and for navigating between Devices.


  • Plugin Mode - Sets up the Matrix for directly selecting presets of the Plugin on the current Track. The Matrix Accessory Buttons are used for loading user-specified Plugins onto the selected Track. The Arrow Buttons are used for navigating Tracks in Session View or the Insert Marker in Arrangement View and for navigating between Banks of presets to select via the Matrix.


  • X/Y Mode - Sets up the Matrix to function as an X/Y Pad that can control two parameters with smoothing to avoid abrupt changes in value. The Matrix Accessory Buttons are used for activating/deactivating learning for the X and Y Axis while the Arrow Buttons are used for basic navigation.


  • X/Y Track Mode - This Mode is essentially identical to X/Y Mode except that it utilizes HazMapping to control two parameters on the current Track.

General Instrument Mode Pack

Includes 4 Modes for playing a variety of instruments on the current Track.


  • Drum Mode - Sets up the Matrix for playing Drum instruments (other than just the Drum Rack). The Matrix is split into multiple 4x4 quadrants of Drum pads.


  • Note Capture Mode - Sets up the Matrix for playing Notes that be captured from the selected Clip on the current Track.


  • Scale Mode - Sets up the Matrix to play Scales (24 Scale Types are available) and is useful for playing virtually any instrument.


  • User Note Mode - Sets up the Matrix for playing user-assignable Notes.


In all of these Modes, the Matrix Accessory Buttons are used for controlling Note Repeat, which allows the Matrix to produce a stream of continuous, rhythmic Notes at different rates (such as 1/32 or 1/4). 


The Arrow Buttons are used for navigating Tracks in Session View or the Insert Marker in Arrangement View and for switching between Octaves.

HazMap Mode Pack

Includes 3 Mutable Modes that utilize HazMapping to control parameters in different ways via Intelligent Button Sliders.


  • HazMap Chain Mode - Sets up the Matrix for Chain-based HazMapping to parameters of the selected Chain of a Rack on the current Track. The Matrix Accessory Buttons are used for showing/hiding Devices on the selected Chain and incrementally navigating between Chains.


  • HazMap Mix Mode - Sets up the Matrix for Mix-based HazMapping to parameters across the Tracks within the Grid Selector (surrounds the 8 Tracks being controlled). The Matrix Accessory Buttons are used for selecting Pages of mappings.


  • HazMap Track Mode - Sets up the Matrix for Track-based HazMapping to parameters on the current Track.

Mix Mode Pack

Includes 6 Modes that set up the Matrix for controlling Mixer-related parameters. All of these Modes (aside from Track Mode) operate upon the Tracks within the Grid Selector (surrounds the 8 Tracks being controlled).


  • Meters Mode - Sets up the Matrix as Level Meters and Volume controls. The Matrix Accessory Buttons function as a Level Meter and Volume control for the Master Track.


  • Mix Mode - Sets up the Matrix as Intelligent Button Sliders for controlling Mixer-related parameters. By default, the Matrix will control Volume. The Matrix Accessory Buttons select the parameter (Volume, Pan or Send A – F*) the Matrix should control.


  • Pan Mode - Sets up the Matrix as Intelligent Button Sliders for controlling Panning. The Matrix Accessory Buttons are not used in this Mode.


  • Sends Mode - Sets up the Matrix as Intelligent Button Sliders for controlling Send Levels. The Matrix Accessory Buttons select the Send (Send A – H*) the Matrix should control.


  • Track Mode - Sets up the Matrix as Intelligent Button Sliders for controlling Mixer-related parameters (Volume, Pan and Send A - F) of the current Track. The Matrix Accessory Buttons are not used in this Mode while the Arrow Buttons are used for basic navigation.


  • Volume Mode - Sets up the Matrix as Intelligent Button Sliders for controlling Volume. The Matrix Accessory Buttons are not used in this Mode.


In all of these Modes (aside from Track Mode), the Arrow Buttons are used for navigating the Grid Selector.


* The number of Sends that can be controlled depends upon the number of Matrix Accessory Buttons that are available.

Session Mode Pack

Includes 7 Modes for controlling Clips and Scenes across the Tracks and Scenes within the Grid Selector (surrounds the Tracks and Scenes being controlled).


  • Session Mode - Sets up the Matrix for launching Clips and the Matrix Accessory Buttons for launching Scenes.


  • Session Delete Mode - Identical to Session Mode except that it deletes Clips and Scenes instead of launching them.


  • Session Duplicate Mode - Identical to Session Mode except that it duplicates Clips and Scenes instead of launching them.


  • Session Record Mode - Identical to Session Mode except that it automatically manages Track Arming and Session Recording for you to easily allow for recording and overdubbing into Session View Clips/Clip Slots.


  • Session Select Mode - Identical to Session Mode except that it selects Clips and Scenes instead of launching them.


  • Session Snap Mode - Sets up the Matrix for storing and launching Session Snapshots (the playing state of all Tracks in a Live Set). The Matrix Accessory Buttons are used for storing and deleting Session Snapshots.


  • Session Split Mode - Splits the Matrix and Matrix Accessory Buttons in half. The upper half functions the same as in Session Mode. The lower half is used for Stopping, Muting, Soloing, Selecting and Arming the Tracks within the Grid Selector.


In all of these Modes, the Arrow Buttons are used for navigating the Grid Selector.

Limited Compatibility Mode Pack

Includes one miscellaneous Mode that has limited compatibility. Unlike the other Modes on this page, the Modes in this Pack are not compatible with every Arsenal-powered Control Surface script that has a Button Matrix. 


  • User Mode - Sets up the Matrix and Matrix Accessory Buttons for use with Max for Live or MIDI Mapping on MIDI Channel 6. The Arrow Buttons are used for basic navigation. This Mode is not compatible with Arsenal_NIMJ, Arsenal_PS1 or Arsenal_PS2.
